Indonesia Air Asia Airbus A320-200

Booking the Flight & Cost of the Flight

This flight was booked through the Air Asia website on my laptop, paying full fare. This flight was booked in conjuction with another flight on the same ticket. An economy class ticket from Denpasar to Jakarta can start from as low as IDR 924,900 for the base fare, which . Bundles are available; a value pack can be an extra IDR 97,814; fare inclusive of baggage, a meal and seat selection with some saving on the fare in comparison to adding onto the base fare. Premium Flex fares can be an extra IDR 181,812 from the base fare and includes more perks, including flexibility in cancelling or changing the ticket if the need arises.

Operating Aircraft

The operating aircraft for this flight was 15-year-old PK-AXT, which is an Airbus A320-200 operated by Indonesia Air Asia, the Indonesian subsidiary of the Air Asia conglomerate based in Malaysia. This Airbus A320 was the 3486th one to be built and is powered by two CFM56-5B6 engines. It was originally delivered to Malaysia's Air Asia in May 2008; registered 9M-AHK, before moving to Indonesia Air Asia in December 2011 as PK-AXT, where it flies today. When I flew on the aircraft, it was apparent that the aircraft was very clean and appeared to have been well looked after.

Cabin

The cabin on this Airbus A320-200 was very clean and well maintained. It was very red inside with its red seat headrests at the front of the aircraft, keeping with the airline's identity. It felt quite roomy inside this cabin as well.

Seating

For this flight, I paid IDR136,730 for seat 5A, designated as a 'hot seat' in the front of the aircraft. There are a total of 180 seats on Indonesia Air Asia's Airbus A320-200, in an all-economy class 3-3 layout. These seats are leather and vary in colour throughout the cabin and have a seat pitch of between 28-29 inches and a width of 17 inches. Seats in rows 1-5, 12 and 14 are designated in a 'Hot Seat'. Seats in rows 6-11, 15-31 are designated as a 'Standard Seat', with some seats within these zones costing more to book; being a low-cost carrier, seat selection is available for a fee, and different seats cost a different amount of money.

Seats for this flight were charged in Indonesian rupiah (IDR), and also differed in cost dependent on position in the aircraft as well within these zones. Looking in the front 'Hot Seat' zone between rows 1 and 5, a seat in row 1 went for IDR 182,710, while a seat between rows 2 and 5 cost about IDR 136,730. A 'Standard Seat' between rows 6 and 11 cost IDR 75,020. The 'Hot Seat' seats in the overwing exits (rows 12 and 14) cost IDR 149,600 to reserve, and seats in the rear 'Standard Seat' zone between rows 15 and 31 were IDR 41,141 to pre-book. Alternatively one could skip seat selection and be automatically assigned to a random seat.

Inflight Customer Service

A team of Indonesia Air Asia flight attendants provided the inflight service. This team were fantastic from the very beginning, and I noticed that the crew were quite good at providing a more one-on-one style of service, which was great to see. The flight crew were great as well, with the first officer making an announcement in the cabin in person thanking passengers for being on board early, aiding to the flight being a little early departing. The flight attendants were quite helpful to me as well, even with a language barrier.

Inflight Entertainment

There was a safety card, air-sickness bag on hand, an inflight menu and a duty-free magazine in the seat pocket, but no inflight magazine. Indonesia Air Asia does not provide any seatback or overhead TVs. I did not notice anything in regard to in-flight Wi-Fi. I was fascinated in seeing a prayer invocation card in the seat pocket as well. The safety card was pleasantly designed; as it should be. Duty-free is available on domestic Indonesia Air Asia flights, and I purchased an Indonesia Air Asia shirt, which cost me IDR 100,000. For the flight I listened to music and gazed out the window, enjoying the views of Indonesia outside.

Final Verdict

I found this flight onboard the Indonesia Air Asia Airbus A320-200 to be quite an enjoyable experience, and it was a great first taste of Indonesian hospitality and culture as well. There was nothing that I could really fault on this flight. The aircraft was clean, the service was great and the crew were passionate, helpful and attentive. I also liked how even on a domestic flight within Indonesia, all announcements were conducted in both Indonesian and English. Overall, this was yet another great experience flying onbard an Air Asia service, and I look forward to flying on a subsidiary of the massive airline conglomerate in the future.
